Raúl's 100th cap comes against Iceland
Raúl has set another milestone. By playing against Iceland, the captain of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team donned the Red shirt for the 100th time, a number never reached or likely to be reached by any Spaniard, other than goalkeeper Andoni Zubizarreta, who has 126 caps. But, the White's number ‘7’ is only 29 years old, and he wants to continue making history.
“This kid is a gold mine,” stated Raúl's father, Pedro, in the halls of Zaragoza's Corona de Aragón Hotel at the end of October 1994. His son, Raúl was about to make his Real Madrid debut. Although Raúl missed finding the back of the net on more than one ocassion on that historic 29 October 1994, his father's words were more than just a premonition of things to come.
Raul's 0.44 goals per game average speak wonders. Of course, Lángara's 1.42 goals per game (17 goals in 12 matches) is an insurmountable figure, but that was a different era of football, with five forwards and virtually no restrictions. Nowadays, in the world of football that puts such a high price on goal scoring ability, nearly one goal every two matches is an achievement reserved for a select few, and Raúl is one of them.
Only 29 years old
Raúl has achieved all that he has in just 29 years, giving us a clear idea about both his precocity -he debuted with Spain on 9 October 1996 against the Czech Republic in Prague- and his voracity. Hierro donned the red shirt 89 times, Camacho 81 times, Gordillo 75 times, Butragueño 69, Arconada 68, and Míchel 66, to name a few. These distinguished names speak louder than words as to the magnitude of Raúl's feat. Again, he is only 29 years old. Undoubtedly, Raúl has his sight set on Zubi's 126 caps and the challenge of playing in his fourth World Cup in South Africa 2010.
Last night, Raúl played his 100th match for Spain. The only player with more caps is the former Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizarreta. Raúl, by far, is already the top scorer in Spanish history. He broke the record of 29 goals on 12 February 2003 against Germany when he scored two times. The Madrid native has scored 44 times for the Reds, exceeding Fernando Hierro (29 goals in 89 matches), Morientes (26 goals in 43 matches), Butragueño (26 in 69 matches), Di Stéfano (23 in 31 matches), Salinas (23 in 56), and Míchel (21 in 66), to name the top six of the exclusive list.
Three World Cups and two Eurocups
Raúl's Spanish national team CV is impressive. Only 29 years old, he has played in three World Cups (France ’98, Korea & Japan ’02, and Germany ’06) and two Eurocups (Belgium & Holland ’00 and Portugal ’04). Thus, Raúl has participated in every important event the national team has played in since 1998. He was about to play in the 1996 Eurocup, but his debut with the Spanish first team only took place on 9 October of that same year, after both the press and fans had been demanding his inclusion on the teamsheet for months. Raúl kept insisting, and, finally, Javier Clemente gave him his chance. Since then, Raúl has never left.
Raúl can boast of being the only Spaniard to score in three different World Cups. In France ’98, he scored against Nigeria; in 2002 he scored once against Paraguay and twice against South Africa; and, this summer, his goal marked the turnaround in the Red's 3-1 win over Tunisia. His Eurocup numbers haven't been as impressive: just one goal against Slovenia in 2000.
And, of course, Real Madrid
And if that's not enough, Raúl has combined his national team career with an even more spectacular one with Real Madrid. Ever since Valdano first played him at La Romareda, Raúl has accumulated a magnificent list of honours in his 12 seasons with the first team. He has won everything while wearing the white shirt: Four La Liga titles, three Spanish Supercups, three European Cups, one European Supercup, and two Intercontinental Cups. He's been the Spanish League's top scorer on two ocassions, the top scorer in two editions of the Champions League, and he has won one Silver Boot award, two Bronze Boot awards, and in 2001 he won the Bronze FIFA World Player Award. Not only does he want to continue to triumph with Madrid, but his biggest dream is to win a title with the Spanish national team. At only 29 years old, he's still got plenty of time...
